On Responsibility and Accountability

Dreaming about doing, better.

When you talk about
dreaming what you’ll do,
the sky has no limits.

When it comes down to
doing what you’ve dreamed,
limits keep your dreams
from never breaking ground.

When you forget to dream about doing,
you are a doer loving dreaming,
and a dreamer loathing doing.

Who is it who dreams beyond the sky
whose dreams never touch the ground?

If you do not accept it is you,
who is the person you expect
to be the builder of your dreams?

3 Ideas + 3 Questions on responsibility and accountability, from me.

You dream up the dreamer. You become the dreamer of your dreams. You dream up the doer. You become the doer of your dreams. You own the dreamer. You own the doer. You own the actions you take. You own the results you make. If you are not going to dream it, who else will dream it? If you are not going to do it, who else will do it? Everything you need to dream and do, to become the dreamer and doer of your dreams, is already inside of you.

For bringing life to your dreams, three simple ideas about responsibility and accountability:

  1. You are the dreamer of your life. As the owner of your life, you are the dreamer of your life. You are responsible for the dreamer you create. You are responsible for the dreams you create. In dreaming well, you're obligated to get to know the dreamer inside of you. You’re obligated to imagine what living a great life looks like. In every detail imaginable. In every important area of your life.

  2. The dreamer dreams the doer. A good dreamer dreams the vision of the doer who brings your dreams to life. You are responsible for the doer you create. In dreaming well, you’re obligated to get to know the doer inside of you. You’re obligated to discover what the doer you dream needs to do, to bring your dreams to life. In every detail imaginable. In every important area of your life.

  3. The dreamer becomes the doer. A good dreamer becomes the doer. A good doer owns their dreams. In doing well, you are responsible for what you do and what you don't do, to bring your dreams to life. You are accountable for the results and outcomes of your dreams. When you succeed in bringing dreams to life, you own the results. When you fail to succeed in bringing dreams to life, you own the challenges. You own your successes. You own your failures. You own the consequences.

Three simple questions:

  1. How do you use responsibility and accountability to become a better dreamer and doer?

  2. Where are you struggling to take ownership over your results?

  3. Where are you refusing to own the consequences of failing to bring your dreams to life?

3 insights on responsibility and accountability, from others.

Responsibility equals accountability equals ownership. And a sense of ownership is the most powerful weapon a team or organization can have.
Pat Summitt

Accountability breeds response-ability.
Stephen Covey

Character — the willingness to accept responsibility for one's own life — is the source from which self-respect springs.
