On Generosity

On giving yourself over to the world, expecting nothing in return.

For giving me the eyes
so I might see with understanding,
For giving me the ears
so I might hear with compassion,
For giving me the heart
so I might know kindness and depth of being,
For giving me the mind
so I might know presence in witnessing,
For giving me the spirit
so I might love with an abundance of generosity,
For all the gifts
you have given to me,
I give thanks for all
the love I have to give
so I might ease your suffering.

3 ideas + 3 questions on generosity, from me.

Generosity is the process of offering one’s self over to the world. Generosity is a selfless desire to fully serve others’ well-being. Generosity is a virtue infused with the qualities of kindness and giving. Generosity is about giving, expecting nothing in return. Generosity is about being a blessing to somebody.

Three simple ideas on generosity:

  1. On Giving Thanks. When you are challenged to find the spirit of generosity, remember everything you have been given. Give thanks for all of it. Let your gratitude open the door to your generosity.

  2. On Giving Fully. When you are challenged to figure out what you truly have to give the world, what you are grateful for is what you can be generous with. Give what you are grateful for fully and generously to the world.

  3. On Giving Freely. To walk in the spirit of generosity, give deeply and abundantly from your heart. Give yourself freely. Give your time freely. Give your resources freely. Give your spirit freely. Give freely and ask and expect nothing in return.

Three simple questions on generosity:

  1. Remembering all your gifts, gifts you have given and gifts you have been given, are there any you are ungrateful for?

  2. Is your supply of generosity a limitless or a limited resource?

  3. Where in your world can you give a gift fully and freely, ensuring you will receive no recognition in return?

3 insights on generosity, from others.

Maya Angelou
